The Mercury Mountaineer is a mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was manufactured and marketed by the Mercury part of the Ford Motor Company. The Mercury Mountaineer was introduced in 1997 and is a successful model that is still produced for more than a decade. The Mercury mountaineer was manufactured and marketed in three generations. The Mercury Mountaineer had the five door SUV body style and was sold in different parts of the World. The Mercury Mountaineer is similar to the Ford Explorer however; the interior is different and more advanced.
The Mercury Mountaineer used the FR/F layout; front engine with rear wheel drive and optional four-wheel drive. The parts of the Mercury Mountaineer were assembled at the plant in Louisville, Kentucky and St. Louis, Missouri. The cars that were manufactured from 1997 to 2001 are a part of the first generation and the second generation is from 2002 to 2005. The current generation of the Mercury Mountaineer cars is the third generation is the third and started in 2006. The Mercury Mountaineer used the 4.0 Litre Cologne V6 engine and the 4.6 Litre Modular V8 that was supported by either the five speed 5R55E automatic transmission or the six speed 6R automatic transmission.
