The AMC AMX is produced by was produced by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) and belongs to the Gran Turismo (GT) series. The name, AMX originates from the "American Motors eXperimental" code used on two early AMC prototypes that were shown on tour in what is called the "Project IV" in 1966. AMC worked on changing the "economy car" image and to appeal to a more youthful, performance-oriented market and was successful in making four new models. This model, introduced by AMC was a small two-seater. The Muscle Car Club "world wide muscle car registry" has included the name of this model in the list of muscle car and pony car. AMC president Roy Abernethy sanctioned the Italian coachbuilder Vignale in Turin to construct an operational car in steel.

1965 - AMX full scale models were developed under the direction of Charles Mashigan in advanced styling studios. 1966 -- AMX II, the concept car was designed with fibreglass-body by Vince Gardner. 1968 - The two specially-prepared AMXs set 106 world speed records at a track in Texas. In AMC's promotional description about the run, the model was called a stock and power, handling, and strength was modified by World Land Speed Record holder Craig Breedlove. 1971 - AMX was modified to a higher-performance version of the 4-seat Javelin. 1974 - The high performance javelin version was stopped 1977 -This model was called Hornet 1978 - Performance was improved and was called Concord 1979 and 1980 - This model was finally called Spirit by AMC
