The Dodge 400 was the second K-car by Dodge in the early 1980s similar to the Chrysler LeBaron. The 400 was introduced for the 1982 model year however; was resized and added to the Dodge 600 line-up in 1984. When introduced in 1982, it was available in three body styles: two-door coupe or convertible and a four-door sedan and was made as an upmarket version of the Aries. Although the convertible was not a major part of the manufacturer's range, Chrysler's chairman Lee Iacocca believed he could revive the interest in convertibles. The Dodge was the first convertible introduced by Dodge since the 1971 Challenger and the first domestically-manufactured convertible since 1976. 1983 - The LS trim was omitted from the line-up and the 400 sedan was replaced by the Dodge 600. The coupes and convertibles were named as Dodge 600 from 1984.

The 400 was available in two levels, base and LS. There were two types of engines used, 2.2 litre I4 engine or an optional Mitsubishi-sourced 2.6 litre "Silent Shaft" 4-cylinder. The standard engine for the Convertible was the Mitsubishi-sourced engine. 31,449 vehicles were produced in 1982. 25,952 vehicles were produced in 1983.
