The Volvo 960 was launched during the autumn of 1990 for the 1991 model year. The Volvo 960 was a updated and modified version of the Volvo 760. The very first Volvo 960 for the US-market rolled off the assembly line on August 12, 1991, as a 1992 model. In U.S. the Volvo 960 used the aluminium 24-valve DOHC inline six-cylinder engine. In the Australian market, the Volvo 960s used the V6 engine.
In Italy, the 960 was sold with the 16v 2-litre turbo for the model year 1991-1994. The shapely seats, redesigned seat-belts with hydraulic pretension, ergonomic shifter, opaque sunroof was replaced by a sliding sunshade glass window and the introduction of dual front airbags in some markets were the major changes of the model from 1991 to 1994.
1995 - The Volvo 960 underwent radical changes, the front suspension was completely retooled.
