Generations of 4Runner
First generation (1984 to 1989)
The first Toyota 4 Runner was introduced as a model that is similar to the Toyota pickup. These models came with two doors and were indistinguishable from the pickups from the dashboard forward. All 1984 4 Runner models used the carburetter 2.4 Litre 22R engine and were all available as a four wheel drive system.
Second generation (1990 to 1995)
The second generation models were not like Pickup trucks as the body was completely re-designed although the existing frame was used. Most of the second generation 4Runners was 4-door models however, a 2-door model was produced from 1989 to 1992. The same 2.4 Litre four cylinder (22RE) and 3.0 L V6 (3VZ) engines were available in rear wheel drive and four wheel drive layouts. The model has a lot of cosmetic changes till the last year of production.
Third generation (1996 to 2002)
The third generation models highlighted the build quality and other options that turned the 4Runner into a more luxury-oriented vehicle. The third generation 4 Runner was placed above its competitors as a result of these changes.
The 2.7Litre 3RZ-FE I4 and the 3.4Litre 5VZ-FE V6 engines were introduced and were used successfully. 2001 Models 4 Runner used new transparent taillights, new front grille design and five-spoke design rim.
Fourth generation (2003 to 2009)
The chassis and body of the vehicle was changed and still remained a mid-size semi-luxury SUV which can also be taken off-road. 4Runner is currently available as the SR5, Sport Edition, and Limited models. A double wishbone is used for the front suspension used while the rear is a 4-link type. The optional 4 wheel drive systems were full-time on V8 models while Multi-Mode or part-time on V6 models, both systems used a Torsen center differential but only the V8 model's could be locked.
