The first executive car released by Saab in 1985 is the Saab 9000. This model was based on the Type Four chassis, a platform shared with the Fiat Croma, Lancia Thema and Alfa Romeo 164. The body of Saab 9000 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The Saab 9000 was classified as a 'Large Car' by the EPA although it was shorter than the 900. The Saab 9000 was launched in 1985 as a 5-door hatchback and was powered by a water-cooled, turbocharged DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine. The engine provided a power of 175 hp (130 kW). The Saab 9000 was known for the EDU or the Electronic Display which displayed fuel consumption, distance to an empty fuel tank, alternator output voltage, outside temperature, and lowest battery voltage during vehicle start. Saab 9000 was available with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The normally aspirated engine was introduced in the Saab9000 and 9000 S models, in 1986 as a result 130 hp (97 kW) was produced. The limited edition luxurious Saab 9000 CD Griffin was available for the 1992 model year.
