The Pontiac Grand Am was introduced initially as a mid-size car and later the compact version was introduced. The Pontiac Grand Am was produced by the Pontiac part of General Motors. The third generation of the Pontiac Grand Am between 1985 and 2005 was built in Lansing, Michigan at the Lansing Car Assembly. The name is derived from the other major Pontiac lineups. The Grand signifies Grand Prix luxury and Am is used to signify Trans Am performance. In 1973, the first year of production, 43,136 Grand Ams were built. The Pontiac Grand Am used the 400/2bbl engine with 170 horsepower as standard the 400/4bbl engine with 230 horsepower and 455/4bbl engine with 250 horsepower were used as optional. In 1992 the Grand Am was redesigned to make it suit the requirements of the market.
