The Mercedes-Benz 260 D was the first produced and introduced in 1936. This model is the first diesel engined car produced by Mercedes-Benz. The name refers to the cubic capacity of the engine. The Daimler-Benz group concentrated on military manufacture and produced nearly 2000 vehicles in 1992. The Mercedes-Benz 260 Class was available in different models like saloons, landaulettes and cabriolets and used hydraulic brakes. A surviving example of the car is displayed at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Germany. The weight of the car was approximately 1530 Kg and the top speed was 95 km/h.
Technology Used:
The chassis was based on contemporary Mercedes technology and had transverse leaf spring independent front suspension and swing axles at the rear. The two series of 170 the Mercedes-Benz 260 Class included the pullman-landaulets used only as taxis based on the W21 chassis, called the Nullserie from 1936 to 1937 and the W143 chassis, with a four speed fully synchronized transmission.
