The smallest and least expensive Mercedes-Benz sedan was the 190-Class. The 190-Class was produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1990 to 1993. As a result of the size and the prise this model was nicknamed as the Baby Benz. The Mercedes-Benz 190-Class was built with the aim to extend the mass appeal of the Mercedes brand and was available in a number of different configurations. The Mercedes-Benz 190-Class was available with both gas and diesel engines. The Mercedes-Benz 190-Class was available in two standard versions, a 2.6-liter 6-cylinder or a 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Mercedes-Benz 190-Class or Baby Benz as it was famously known was the only model that offered choice in the transmissions.
The 2.6-liter 6-cylinder engine used by the Mercedes-Benz 190-Class was taken from the midsize 260E Sedan, and provided 158 horsepower. The Mercedes-Benz 190-Class came with a 5-speed manual transmission as standard and the 4-speed automatic was optional. The standard parts available included the driver-side airbag, an antilock braking, air conditioning, power windows and door locks. The trim packages included a Sportline edition as limited edition packages, which were available in 1992 and 1993. The main features of these editions of the Mercedes-Benz 190-Class included special alloy wheels, a sunroof, leather seats, and special badging.
