Mazda introduced the B-Series line in Japan in 1961. The first model of the B-Series was the B1500, where the name described the engine displacement. Mazda has sold two different compact pickup trucks under the B-Series name. In 1994 the Mazda B-Series pickup was changed after the North American B-Series became a rebadged Ford Ranger. In the American market the B-Series was engineered by Mazda and developed by Ford. The Mazda B-Series is the oldest Mazda nameplate still in production.

Mazda used the engine displacement to determine the name from the first vehicle of the B-Series pickup. The B1500 had a 1.5 L I4 engine, and the B4000 has a 4.0 L V6. In 2002 the name of the Mazda B-Series pickup was changed to Mazda Truck in the United States. Mazda B-Series was known by different names in different markets. It was called Mazda Bravo in Australia, Mazda Bounty in New Zealand, and Mazda Drifter in South Africa. The B4000 Cab Plus SE model will be discontinued in the North American market in 2009.
