The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV sold by the automaker Ford Motor Company. The Ford Escape is called the U20 and was introduced in 2000 as a 2001 model year. The Escape is the first hybrid SUV and the hybrid version was released in 2004. The Ford Escape used the Ford CD2 platform and was based on the Mazda GF platform. The Ford Escape used the name as Ford Maverick when sold in parts of Europe. In 2001, the first generation Ford Escape was released in parts of North America. The Ford Escape was bigger than the small SUV offered from Honda and Toyota and was smaller than the Ford Explorer. Ford Escape used a car like Monocoque design with a fully independent suspension parts and rack and pinion steering. Crash test results of the Escape were very good the car received 5 out of 5 stars for driver protection and 4 out of 5 stars for passenger protection in a 35 mph (56 km/h) frontal impact.
